Boarding House or hotel accommodation

Boarding House...

Boarding house, living with a Dutch family.

Would you like to join one of our (international) professional courses,
and live to far away, or in another country?

Then the Boerma Instituut can offer you a comfortable
alternative to reside instead of a hotel:
living with a Dutch family in Aalsmeer (usually these family’s have children that have already moved out)
Very practical, considering you’re very near to the school.
If you want to make use of this opportunity, then (if needed)
the transportation from and to the boarding house is included
.

For (international) students who travel through Schiphol Airport,
the transportation from and to the airport is also included.
In which case we always meet on a designated time at the meeting point in the central hall. This way, you are very hard to miss.

When it is neccecary that you take a taxi, please look at the
Schiphol plaza map where the taxiparking is. Do not except an offer from men who are waiting at the gates and who offers you a taxi ride. They are not real taxi drivers and they overcharge.

Several host family’s in Aalsmeer have been doing this for years for our students, and with full satisfaction from all the participants,
the student, the host(ess) and the Boerma Instituut.

At the boarding house, the student can count on a comfortable bedroom,
equipped with a table and a chair, so that the students can do some homework or maybe write a letter home.

Different rules apply in each boarding house

use of the kitchen:
In some boarding houses you are can prepare your own dinner,
and in other houses you can eat with the family for a small compensation.

use of the bedroom:
Which can mean that you can tidy up your own, or it is done the hostess.
You can always ask for a vacuum cleaner if necessary.

Once a week sheets will be replaced.

use of the bathroom:
No need to bring your own bathroom towels. They will be available. Size can differ in each boarding house.
Most bathrooms have a shower and a washing-basin, a bath is usually
not available in this area.

Breakfast:
Breakfast is also included in the boarding house fee,
but the boarding house rules on this can differ on this:

Some boarding house ladies will tell you where you can find the ingredients for breakfast, others will put it on the table for you or even set the table.

Different nationalities, bring different customs.
For instance, in Japan they ‘do the dishes’ and bathing rituals in
a different way then we do here in holland.
Every country has their own customs and it is nice to see how they can be combined in the boarding houses.

At the boarding houses there will be Dutch customs.

At the school we have a Boerma Instituut Hospitality book, with tips and ideas, what to do and where to go.

Mailbox..

At a meeting with all boarding house family’s, just before the summer holiday. It was good and fun to hear how ideas were exchanged about different house rules. Everybody has a different point of view on different matters, for the students and for the host family’s.

Questions like:
For instance, can the washing machine be used individually b the students or does the laundry go together with the rest of the family’s?
Are students allowed to prepare their own dinner, if so, how extensive?

Can students have their dinner (for a small compensation) with the family? Sometimes student cook for their hosts or fellow students something traditional from their home country.
Further more, it’s in everyone’s interest to talk these things through properly,
so that everyone knows what to do and what not.

For instance a few practical things:
a copy of your passport and
a mobile phone number left with your host family
is needed for emergencies.

As most of our boarding houses are in the same area, the ‘Hornmeer’.
We have a designated pick-up spot were the students are picked up in the morning and dropped of again in the afternoon after the lessons have finished: the Mailbox on the Mozartlaan.

Throughout the years some affectionate contacts were made. Some host family’s are still being kept up to date on what’s happening with their (former) guests after ten years! Marriages, births, career changes and so on, they’re all reported, even birthday’s and anniversary’s are not forgotten.

Unsurprisingly, Christmas and new year is always a time to send the best wishes to each other. On a regular basis, Japanese brides come by on their honeymoon to show their ‘brand-new’ husbands!

Whatever the outcome, the goodbyes, after the course is finished are always emotional. It’s not uncommon that tears flow when they say goodbye to their ‘moms’ and ‘dads’ before the cab moves out of sight, and ‘our’ student leaves for the airport with all the new knowledge they gained during the course, and maybe start a whole new career when they return to their home country.

boarding house Fee...

The Boarding House fee is a not included in the course fee.

In 2008 the boarding house fee is 35,- euro per night/per person.
Boarding House reservations in Aalsmeer can only be made through
 Boerma Instituut.

When the boarding house is booked at the Boerma Instituut transportation From the Boarding house to the school and v.v.
is included in the boarding house fee.

Included..

Included in this fee:

ü   Private Bedroom
ü

Daily breakfast
ü   Use of Bathroom
ü   Use of Kitchen
ü

Daily transportation Boarding House <-> Boerma Instituut v.v.
ü   One time transportation Schiphol Airport <->Boerma Instituut v.v.

This way the student can learn a bit about the Dutch way of living, which can be very surprising. We think that the financial benefits are obvious, because staying in a Boarding House is cheaper than a hotel.
